Maggie's Organics
Info
For over ten years, Maggie's Functional Organics has been manufacturing clothing apparel made from organic fibers. Our products are made from certified organic cotton, wool, and linen and pesticide-free hemp. After learning of the ravages of conventional cotton growing, we dedicated our company to converting as many acres as possible from conventional to organic agriculture. We chose simple affordable designs, and colors that are classic and wearable year after year. We believe our company should scorn the planned obsolescence of the fashion industry, and instead produce solidly-constructed basics. During the past several years, many of our domestic apparel-makers have either gone out of business, or moved to developing countries, leaving us with unsewn contracts and unfinished purchase orders. It gradually became impossible to work with these mills as we were left to cover our losses without any recourse. We began to explore other alternatives and became instrumental in the development of Maquilador Mujeres, a worker-owned cooperative in Nueva Vida, Nicaragua. The story of this project and these amazing women is worth seeing, and available in the documentary: "Ants that Moved Mountains" video. (15 minute, 36MB, Windows Media Player). Our company is now dedicated to developing cooperative partnerships with workers who have stake in their future, and to fair-trade practices. We're also dedicated to linking you, the wearer, to all those who create our products. Thanks for your support through these tumultuous years; we hope to continue to serve you now and in the future.
