Info

What is known today as Northwest Baptist Church was formed in 1893 as a mission of the First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem. In 1909, the Chapel, as it was called, became North Winston Baptist Church in 1909 and was located on Patterson Avenue. The congregation quickly outgrew its first building and in 1913 moved to its second home on Liberty Street. In 1925, the congregation moved again to a larger structure on the corner of 16th Street and Ivy Avenue where it remained for 42 years. In 1967, the church moved to its current location and changed its name to Northwest Baptist Church. Founded in the Southern Baptist tradition, Northwest displays a strong commitment to missions. We financially and prayerfully support the work of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, which means the largest portion of our budgeted mission dollars goes to Baptist work in our state. Through our gifts to the State Convention, we give to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and the Southern Baptist Convention, which does work nationally and internationally. We also offer support through special offerings to the mission work of the International Mission Board and the North American Mission Board, both of the Southern Baptist Convention, and the Cooperative Baptist Global Missions. Our strong and diverse interest in missions motivates us to offer financial support locally: the Pilot Mountain Baptist Association, Crisis Control, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina, Samaritans Ministries, and the International Campus Ministries of the Triad. Because God has blessed us with wonderful facilities, we host Bible Study Fellowship International, Foundations Homeschool Program and the Developmental Disabilities Ministries office of the Baptist Children's Home of North Carolina. Through the years, Northwest Baptist Church has been characterized by a ministry of caring for those within its own fellowship, and a ministry of reaching out to the needs of the community and the world. Certainly, the latter is seen in our strong commitment to missions. The former is viewed in the variety of activities offered, which include Bible study for all ages, worship, missions and music programs, fellowship and ministry opportunities, and outreach events. As Northwest Baptist Church journeys into the 21st Century, we face what many churches are facing: a perceived lack of relevancy in the lives of people. Northwest Baptist Church is transitioning itself for the future in order to become as meaningful as we were in the past. We believe God has brought us to this point in our history and place in the community for a reason and, through prayer, hard work and faith, God will transform the church as He does in our individual lives: through the good news of Jesus Christ.
