The NDB is a longitudinal research data bank that provides research services to the community of rheumatology patients and physicians. The NDB, in collaboration with rheumatologists, performs outcomes research by direct interaction with rheumatology patients. Patients report on all aspects of their illness in detailed semi-annual questionnaires. A staff of 27 process the questionnaire data and validate it by telephone contact with patients and physicians, and by review of medical records. Our current activities utilize a variety of research questionnaires suitable for clinical use, provided free of charge. We offer an assortment of methods for data collection in the clinical setting: paper questionnaires, direct Internet entry and off-line electronic entry by PDF. We are able to score faxed questionnaires and immediately fax back results to rheumatologists for clinical patient care. Questionnaire information is stored in a data bank format and participating rheumatologists have full access to their data. We encourage rheumatologists to participate in NDB projects and join in collaborative research opportunities. The NDB has a strong track record of important research activities. Major interests include both the treatment aspects of illness (e.g., anti-TNF therapy) and social medicine, work disability, and the social consequence of illness. The NDB collaborates with researchers worldwide, and makes its data available to qualified investigators without charge.
