During Neil's tenure on the AEA board of directors, the AEA directors were successful in making great strides within the emu industry; legislation was passed to gain mandatory USDA inspection for emu, extensive research was performed at the University of Massachusetts proving the capabilities of emu oil, comprehensive nutritional tests and comparisons to all other meats were made on emu meat at the University of Wisconsin, trade rules were developed to define specifications for three grades of emu oil and a certification program was developed with the help of the American Oil Chemists Society (AOCS) to identify and certify Fully-Refined emu oil (the highest grade of emu oil recognized by the American Emu Association). Lois served on the board of directors of the Tennessee Emu Association (TNEA) since 2000, serving as president until 2004 and then serving as vice-president. Lois currently serves on the board of directors for the Tennessee Ratite Association having served there as president from 2001-2003. During Lois's tenure on the TNEA and TRA board of directors, the Tennessee emu industry has enjoyed great relations with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, the middle Tennessee school systems and several middle Tennessee hospitals.
