TriPyramid Structures, Inc. was founded in the late 1980's in response to the growing exploration of non-traditional materials and their applications in architectural designs. Through most of the 1970's and 1980's, TriPyramid's founding partners were building a yacht rigging company, Navtec, Inc. As construction began on the Louvre pyramid, architect I.M. Pei sought out Navtec to create a system that would support the pyramid's glazing without detracting from the appearance and coherence of the structure. The high-strength stainless steel rods being manufactured by Navtec for racing sailboats neatly fit the design aesthetic, providing structural strength with minimal visual impact. The success of the Louvre inspired other designers to investigate similarly creative solutions. When others at Navtec decided to remain dedicated to its marine business, Tim Eliassen and Michael Mulhern created TriPyramid Structures, Inc. to pursue the architectural applications of tension structures. Eliassen and Mulhern share a powerful combination of training in mechanical and aerospace engineering, as well as hands-on experience in nuclear engineering, manufacturing, metallurgy and construction methods. Their depth of knowledge of material properties and experience designing rigging for the world's finest sailing yachts helped them establish a new standard for architectural excellence. Recognized by the yachting realm as ingenious innovators, they soon gained a reputation in the building world as trusted partners in developing elegant solutions in a wide range of applications. Today, TriPyramid is playing a critical role in some of the most imaginative current architectural projects and provides a full range of standard components for support and connections in a wide range of projects.
