Info

Transitional Housing Corporation (THC) is a faith-based, District-based, non-profit that provides housing and comprehensive support services to homeless and at-risk families so that they can make transformational changes in their lives. THC operates two transitional housing apartment buildings, Partner Arms I and Partner Arms II, along the Georgia Avenue corridor in Ward 4 of Washington DC, currently housing 27 families with 62 children. During their stay in Partner Arms, families participate in a mandatory program of services that include employment and career counseling, family dynamics and parenting skills, life skills counseling, substance abuse counseling, and therapy for adults and children. Since 1990, THC has helped over 152 families move from homelessness to permanent housing and lives of independence and dignity. THC's supportive services are designed to assure that residents receive services targeted to the following areas: Development of family decision-making skills Job readiness, job search and interview, job maintenance and advancement skills Independent living skills (budgeting, spending, household care) Community living skills (participation, cooperation, pride, awareness, decision making, advocacy, action) Increased competence, confidence, and self-esteem Substance abuse assessment and counseling Youth services programs: child advocacy, counseling and therapy, substance abuse prevention and youth enrichment Mental Health services and counseling, on site, on a case-by-case, as needed basis. THC program supportive services also provides a series of knowledge and skills-building workshops for Partner Arms participants including a popular Women's Wellness Workshop that addressed areas such as health, parenting, nutrition, employment, and credit counseling. With the help of our many volunteers, THC also provides a variety of staff supervised youth enrichment activities, such as a monthly Reading Club at each building and a weekly Garden Club at Partner Arms I. An equally rewarding volunteer opportunity for churches and larger groups is the Adopt-an-Apartment Program. The homeless families entering the Partner Arms buildings have few or no furnishings. Churches and other groups adopt apartments and provide furniture and furnishings. As the families successfully graduate from the program they are allowed to take everything with them. A church or other organization then refurnishes the apartment for the next family. This has proven to be a meaningful experience for those involved. Providing transitional housing is only the beginning of helping at-risk families achieve lives of self-sufficiency. More affordable housing is needed. THC, through its affiliate, THC Affordable Housing, Inc., has purchased a vacant building in NW Washington for development as affordable housing and is in negotiations for another property for the same purpose of providing needed affordable housing for low -income families in the Washington metropolitan area. Recently, THC has been approved by the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness to start a new scattered-site program, Housing with Care. Through the work of a roving Case Worker, THC will provide permanent supportive housing to 19 disabled families located at scattered sites throughout Wards 1, 4, and 5 in the District of Columbia. Participants will receive supportive case management and clinical services, much like THC's Partner Arms programs.
