Neighbors' Consejo was founded in 1994 with the intention of helping low-income, underserved immigrants and residents attain socioeconomic, emotional, employment and financial stability. We are one of the only full-time, bilingual social service organizations that has the capacity to provide comprehensive outreach, advocacy and educational services to Spanish-speaking homeless men and women who suffer from addiction, alcoholism and mental health problems. Our approach to building a sustainable core of life skills and stability within each person begins with our overall commitment to holistic care and empowerment. Our mission is to provide multicultural services for the homeless, addicted and low-income men, women, and families of Washington D.C., in the neighborhoods of Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant. We work to connect men and women to social and economic opportunities and to empower them to self-sufficiency. We have served more than 3,000 homeless and low-income men and women in and around the neighborhoods of Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant and elsewhere in the metropolitan Washington area. In 2002 we were able to connect 1,090 homeless and low-income Latino-Hispanic men, women and their families to essential social services, bilingual medical access, transitional and affordable housing, and educational training. Demand for our services continues to grow and we are currently seeing an average of 75 new clients per month. The Neighbors' Consejo continuum of care model means that we take a holistic approach to empowering our clients into self sufficiency. Beginning with the initial contact from our street outreach program, as a walk-in or through referral from other agencies, we prepare an individual case management plan that identifies each client´s problems and starts the process of solving them. This ranges from providing crisis intervention, comprehensive case management including referrals to health care, shelter and housing services, legal assistance, and other needed services, vocational training, substance abuse and mental health counseling, transitional housing and medical transportation.
