Phillips Automotive, Inc. was founded in 1964 by Tench H. Phillips, Jr. His career in the car business began many years before when he was a student at Georgia Tech University and took a job selling cars on a part time basis to support his young family. After graduation, Tench moved to Norfolk, Virginia where he, along with his brother Conoly opened a used car dealership in 1956. Their first new car franchise was English Ford. When they acquired Rambler in 1960, business really took off. The Phillips brothers Rambler commercials were very popular in the early 60's and their cutting edge approach to marketing quickly made them a formidable dealer in the local market. In 1964, Tench had the opportunity to acquire the Oldsmobile franchise and Phillips Oldsmobile, Inc. was established. The business quickly outgrew the Norfolk facilities and moved to its present location in 1970. In 1972, we added the Mercedes-Benz franchise and Land Rover in 1991. Though still functional, our facilities became dated. So in 1995 an extensive renovation project was initiated beginning with our showrooms and ending with our service facilities in 1999. To reflect our "new" image, we changed our name to Phillips Automotive, Inc. In May 2002 Volvo was added to our family of dealerships. Located directly across the street from our current facilities, the former Continental Volvo dealership along with their dedicated staff has been a welcome addition to our ever growing team of Service and Sales professionals. In February, 2004 Philips Collision Repair Center opened offering Hampton Roads residents the finest Collision repair and paint facility in the area. This is the only fully certified repair center for Mercedes-Benz and Volvo products in the Hampton Roads market. Also in 2004 Phillips Volvo Hampton opened for business in a totally refurbished facility located at 1010 W. Mercury Blvd. In Hampton. Peninsula Volvo customers may now enjoy the full benefits of an exclusive Volvo sales and service experience. Today our dealerships have three locations, plus a separate Collision repair center and employs over 250 automotive professionals.
