On February 1, 1992, Friendship House opened its doors to provide structure and support for women in recovery from alcoholism and other drug addictions. Located at 3728 Gillham Road in Kansas City's historic Hyde Park, Friendship House was established as a non-profit 501(c)3 by co-founders Judith A. Janes and Carol S. Patterson. After years of service to women in recovery, the need for a similar residential program for women with children became very apparent. Catherine's Place, focusing on serving women with their children as a family unit, opened its doors in 2002 at 3720 Gillham Road. The simple concept of serving small numbers of women in a warm, supportive, home setting is central to Friendship House / Catherine's Place's success in helping women, and women with their children, to rebuild their lives and strengthen their families by sustaining their sobriety, regaining their self-esteem and becoming financially self-sufficient. Friendship House / Catherine's Place remains the only local organization of its kind to date.
