Horace Mann Educators Corporation (HMEC) is an insurance holding company. Through its subsidiaries, HMEC markets and underwrites personal lines of property and casualty (primarily private passenger automobile and homeowners) insurance, retirement annuities (primarily tax-qualified products) and life insurance in the United States. The Company markets its products primarily to K-12 educators and other employees of public schools and their families. Principal insurance subsidiaries of the Company are Horace Mann Life Insurance Company, Horace Mann Insurance Company, Teachers Insurance Company, Horace Mann Property & Casualty Insurance Company and Horace Mann Lloyds. The property and casualty segment accounted for 55% of its insurance premiums written and contract deposits in 2007, the annuity and life insurance segments together accounted for 45% of insurance premiums written and contract deposits in 2007.
