Shooting Star Native Seeds was established in 1989 in response to the increasing demand for local genotype, native prairie seed. Using the equipment, facilities, land, and expertise gained from a commercial farming background, Shooting Star quickly became a major supplier of native grass and wildflower seed throughout the Upper Midwest. Foundation seed for the native production fields was originally collected within a 50-mile radius of the intersecting borders of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. As production and sales increased, additional seed sources from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan were added, broadening Shooting Star's genetic base. There are currently 600 acres of native grasses and wildflowers in field production, with more proposed for the near future. Since its modest beginning, Shooting Star has grown to become a major supplier of native seed for the DNR, DOT, NRCS, contractors, farmers, and homeowners across the Midwest.
