The Gow School is the world's oldest boarding school for boys, grades 7-12, with dyslexia and other language based learning disabilities. Founded in 1926 and located near Buffalo, New York, Gow's college preparatory curriculum is presented in small classes using a multi-sensory format in a technology rich environment. The 4:1 student to faculty ratio allows focus on the remediation of language based learning differences (reading, written expression, spelling, auditory processing and mathematics) through a phonics based program known as Reconstructive Language. A near relative of the Orton Gillingham method, Reconstructive Language was developed by the school's founder, Peter Gow, Jr., along with personal insight from his colleague and friend, renowned neurologist Dr. Samuel T. Orton. In addition to academics, character education is emphasized throughout The Gow School program. In the classroom, in the dormitory and on the athletic field, students are encouraged to adhere to the four PILLARS of kindness, respect, honesty and hard work. Through daily participation in organized sports, students realize the benefits of fitness, discipline and cooperation, while an active community service program enables students to experience the personal reward of helping others.
