Info

The Lloyd Center serves individuals, agencies, and organizations in southeastern New England (Rhode Island to Boston to Cape Cod). It is the only area organization focused on educating the public about coastal and watershed issues, and conducting research on coastal ecosystems and endangered species. The Center cooperates on a broader level in coastal, environmental, and educational programming throughout New England, nationally and internationally. The Lloyd Center offers: 1) A beautiful trail system through 55 acres of maritime forest bordering an estuary, and a view-scape recognized as one of 15 "Special Places" by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; 2) Exhibits which highlight local natural resources, Lloyd Center research and education projects; 3) Diverse contract, fee-based and free-of-charge activities, such as guided weekly walks, summer camps, canoe trips, seal watches and lectures; 4) School-related programs for teachers and students; and 5) Collections and expertise that make the Lloyd Center a resource for both environmental professionals and amateurs, researchers, interns, government officials, activists and the general public. To ensure that everyone can enjoy our coastal resources, the Lloyd Center charges no entrance fee to the building, grounds, or our Celebrate Science workshop series. We also encourage everyone, including the handicapped, to volunteer at the Lloyd Center and the opportunity to become personally involved in our coastal habitat environment, research and activities. Our school-based activities further expand our reach to urban audiences. A scholarship program also provides space for ten urban New Bedford students, mostly African-American and other minorities, in our Summer Program. Teachers: Teachers in the sciences and other disciplines participate in our teacher workshops, credit courses, and curriculum development to enhance their environmental science background and teaching skills. We collaborate with local colleges and other organizations to expand programs. We are a museum partner in the National Science Foundation-funded statewide project Partnerships Advancing Learning in Math and Science (PALMS) and the Museum Institute for Teaching Science (MITS), as well as other ongoing regional collaborative programs, including the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts and SEA Connections. Students: From elementary to graduate school, students of all grade levels can learn about the environment from the Lloyd Center. Our educational programs involve students from Providence to Boston to Wareham, nearly 11,000 students in the year 2000 alone. Some students are involved in school-based programs, such as our Coastal Field Studies Program and our Fall River Forest Ecology Program. Others join us for our Summer Program or take credit courses such as the one in Marine Invertebrate Zoology that we co-offer with Colorado College. Interns: Over 350 interns, both undergraduate and graduate, have interned at the Lloyd Center since 1982. As potential educators, scientists, or administrators, this important audience can have a major impact on future environmental studies.
