We're also proud of our name, which for more than 75 years has been as much a promise as a brand name. Our customers tell us they love our name too. Many recall that, as kids, it was fun to be able to say the &H& word in front of their parents and get away with it. Today, it's payback time as these little kids, now fully grown, tell us how their own children love doing the same thing to them. Truth is, the Heluva Good name dates back to 1925 when Perry Messinger, our founder, began making wedges of homemade washed curd cheese in the basement of the A.B. Williams Store in Sodus, N.Y. (For those who ask &Where the heck is Sodus?,& it's on the south shore of Lake Ontario, just east of Rochester.) Messinger sold a little, but mostly did it as a hobby. Then, one day, a traveling salesman stopped in and sampled a wedge. Upon tasting it, he declared, &That's a hell of a good cheese.& At that moment, Messinger knew he had something very special. A new company, and a new name, were born. Heluva Good is still headquartered in Sodus, but we've grown to more than 120 employees with expanded facilities and offices in Albany and Wolcott, N.Y., Charlton, Mass., Youngstown, Ohio, Allentown, Pa., Richmond, Va., and Bristol, Tenn. You can now find Heluva Good products in dairy cases throughout the Eastern and Southern U.S. and all of Canada. Today, Heluva Good is part of the Crowley Foods family of brands owned by HP Hood LLC, Lynnfield, Massachusetts.
