Early Stage Enterprises, LP, is a $44m venture-capital firm that has provided 18 Mid-Atlantic companies with their first equity investment. Early Stage Enterprises is fully invested but will continue to support its active portfolio companies with follow-on investments as appropriate. Early Stage Enterprises has built a reputation as a good partner for entrepreneurs and other funding sources, from angels to VCs with later-stage investment focus. The firm has helped its portfolio companies raise an average of seven times the amount of its initial funding. The partners of Early Stage Enterprises are committed to being actively involved in the development of their portfolio companies. On average, they meet weekly with them, either by phone or in person, the latter being facilitated by the regional focus of the firm, which in general keeps them within a distance that allows for face-to-face meetings. Early Stage Enterprises partners are known as constructive board members whose collective experience -- 40-plus years of early-stage investment and 15 years of operations activity -- gives them increased influence on the boards on which they sit. Based in Princeton, N.J., the firm was founded in 1996 by Ron Hahn and Jim Millar. A third partner, Kef Kasdin, joined in September 2000. Early Stage Enterprises is not accepting new business plans.
