SLAH is a small animal practice specializing in companion animals, primarily dogs and cats, but the staff also cares for rabbits, birds, laboratory animals, and reptiles. Additionally, State Line AH is the animal shelter for the City of Leawood. Lost or stray animals picked up by Animal Control officers are placed in 'protective custody' at State Line AH; treated for injury if necessary, and cared for until their owners claim them or they are adopted by families seeking the 'perfect pet.' Injured and orphaned wild critters - geese, squirrels, wild bunnies, possums, raccoons, and an occasional deer or beaver - are brought in to the hospital for treatment, then are released or placed in a protected animal sanctuary.
