Description of Academy Northwest
Since 1981, Academy Northwest, an accredited K-12 "school-without-walls," has served thousands of homeschooling families. Currently in more than forty locations, learning centers unite parents, students and teachers; tailoring curriculum to student needs. Integrating real-life experiences and biblical worldview in an instructional program, students receive a relevant, individualized education. Weekly instruction with the teacher provides perspective and oversight, as well as active learning opportunities. Expanding our interactive, on-line high school classes provides access to specialists for those hard-to-teach subjects. Our goal is to assist parents in raising up the next generation to give service. We believe uniting dedicated parents and experienced teachers offers students a winning combination for the pursuit of academic excellence and biblical home-centered learning. In 1981, our unique school began serving the homeschooling community by blending private school with home education. In 1985, we became a state-approved private school offering an extension program. Previously, we participated in an official study which was used in developing Washington state laws on homeschooling. Our teachers offer extension program services through their individual locations (usually within their home or a church facility). We exist anywhere we have a certified teacher who is affiliated with us. All our teachers are carefully screened to match our spiritual and academic requirements. The educational emphasis of Academy Northwest is different than strictly homeschooling as a certified teacher oversees the student's academic program. Unlike correspondence or most traditional schools, students are not required to follow a prescribed school curriculum. Rather, learning resources are chosen by the teacher, parent, and student working together to select materials matching student's learning style, academic needs, and interests. Real-life applications and biblical worldview are integrated into the learning process. The program works for gifted, challenged, and average students, as well as adult learners. Learning at Academy Northwest is completed through blending group instruction (usually 1-4 hours per week) and/or one-on-one weekly instruction with the teacher along with individual study at home with parental assistance. All-school field trips and activities are offered also. In addition, a new "wing" is being built involving on-line interactive courses and educational consulting. We currently have over forty teachers and over 500 students with 150+ seniors graduating this year. Many past graduates have earned honors including National Merit finalist and semifinalist. Others have begun successful business enterprises and done numerous church and community service activities as part of their curriculum. We are accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools [NASS].
