Info
Starfish has a rich history of innovation and commercial deployment of its technology, and has been a leader in Internet, wireless and open standards-based solutions. Starfish server-based synchronization technology is the longest running, commercially deployed solution in the synchronization industry. Starfish was the first vendor to commercially deploy Internet-based synchronization services, including groundbreaking implementations of TrueSync Server in solutions at Yahoo! and Excite. Its server technology was also the basis of the first voice-activated sync service. Its end-to-end components, including server and embedded device software, were used in the first OTA synchronization system. Starfish has also been a leader in Java development, the development of small-footprint devices including hardware, firmware and embedded applications, as well as network operations center management. Over the years, Starfish has taken a leading role in developing open standards for synchronization. In early 2000, Starfish recognized that a standard protocol and data definition was required to reduce the complexity of developing, deploying and managing universal data synchronization services across multiple networks, data types and devices. To accomplish this end, Starfish worked with Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson, IBM, Lotus and Matsushita, to co-found the SyncML Initiative, an organization chartered with developing synchronization standards. In late 2000, the SyncML Initiative met its initial objective by releasing the SyncML 1.0 specification that has subsequently been widely adopted within the software and wireless industries. Starfish was the first company to certify and commercially deploy SyncML-enabled server solutions. Starfish also foresaw the need to develop better methods of managing devices and remotely managing software applications. In 1997, Starfish integrated end-user device management features with its synchronization solutions to enable wireless phone and PDA users to configure and personalize their devices from their desktop PC or a browser. To make it easier for customers to keep their synchronization software updated, Starfish developed the Starfish Installer Service as an integrated component of its platforms. Launched in 2000, this Internet-based service provides change notification and remote custom configured software updates.
