Description of American Board of Podiatric Surgery

The American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS), established in May 1975 as an independent, not-for-profit corporation in the District of Columbia. ABPS (initially called "National Board of Podiatric Surgery"), is recognized by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) for the purpose of certifying qualified podiatric surgeons. The first examinations were administered in June 1976 in Chicago to 163 candidates. The Board will administer its 30th annual examination in June 2005. To maintain the credibility of its examination process, the Board has always contracted with outside agencies to grade the examinations and provide statistical analyses. From 1975 through 2004, the ABPS has issued 6,187 diplomate certificates. The current membership (does not include retired or inactive members) of the ABPS has grown to the following as of September 10, 2004:, Certified in Foot and Ankle Surgery
