Tomen America Inc. is an international marketing and distribution company and is a subsidiary of the Japanese general trading company ("Sogo Shosha"), Tomen Corporation. In liaison with its parent company, Tomen America Inc. is active in a variety of markets including the purchase and resale of chemicals and plastics, grains and food products, textiles, and other goods, as well as a wide range of financial, consulting, and project management services including investing capital and participating in joint ventures. Our parent company, Tomen Corporation (formerly known as Toyo Menka Kaisha Ltd.) was established in 1920 as a trading company for cotton. Shortly thereafter a subsidiary was established in Dallas, Texas under the name of Southern Cotton Co. Unfortunately, that company was forced to close during World War II, but re-established itself in 1952 under a new name, Toyo Cotton Co. Toyomenka, Inc. of New York, later renamed Toyomenka (America), Inc. (TMI) was established October 15, 1951. With the expansion and growth of the Japanese economy, Toyomenka and the parent company expanded their knowledge of trading, financing, investing and marketing. Steel and raw material such as coal, iron ore, and agricultural and chemical products were introduced successively. In 1990, the company name was changed from Toyomenka (America), Inc. to Tomen America Inc. Today the operations of a general trading company such as Tomen America Inc. and its Japanese counterpart are complex. Their primary services can be summarized in two general categories: first, as an international purchasing and marketing agent and second, as international financial, investment, and consultant services.
