PWA is a leader in innovative approaches to complex water resources problems for clients throughout the Western U.S. and abroad. Our work integrates rigorous science with practical engineering solutions to address a range of problems affecting environments from the headwaters to the coast. Many of our projects have been successfully constructed; restoring life and healthy function to degraded streams, rivers, wetlands, tidal inlets and beaches to create ecologic, economic, flood protection and recreational benefits for the environment and society as a whole. At a time when river engineers were trained to achieve success by efficiently "plumbing" and draining natural water systems, Philip Williams expanded this single-purpose objective by pioneering new approaches in the field of environmental hydrology. Guided by his disenchantment with engineering projects that desecrated the land, and pushed forward by an emerging environmental advocacy movement in Northern California, Philip promoted a multidisciplinary approach to ecological restoration. Through PWA, the consulting practice he established in 1976, Philip led the effort to integrate the best expertise in ecological and geomorphic processes with traditional civil engineering to pursue multi-objective solutions that benefit the natural and social environments in which all living species exist. PWA continues to develop creative solutions that advance the field of applied environmental hydrology. In the last decade, PWA's integration of geomorphology and eco-hydraulics with the restoration design process has become a template for the professional restoration community.
