Info

Salem Cyberspace, founded in April 2002, started as a not-for-profit technology center dedicated to helping people of all ages, ethnic cultures, and social and economic backgrounds become proficient in the use of computer technology. Our original goal was not just to teach people how to use computers but to provide them with opportunities to use these new skills and knowledge in a meaningful way. To this end, we created innovative curricula to help our students bridge the "Digital Divide." Over time, however, responding to the articulated demand of the community, Salem CyberSpace became a community technology learning center dedicated to expanding academic and career opportunities for those in need. In our Center, we see technology as a tool that becomes a means to an end. Technology is used creatively to teach design, English, financial literacy, job readiness and more. The "Digital Divide" was and continues to be a very real problem in our nation, particularly for those families earning under $25,000 per year or for many adults who cannot move up on a career ladder because of lack of computer skills. To be on the less fortunate side of the divide means that there is less opportunity to take part in our new information-based economy as it relates to jobs, education, entertainment, and communications opportunities that are available on line. We continue to be dedicated to helping the families of our communities reach their potential in both their academic life and/or career. Salem CyberSpace staff also provide many hours of consultation and services to other non-profits, some pro-bono and some fee-based. As part of our mission, we train our students to help deliver some of these services.
