Over its first decade, INTRAV quickly developed into a leading marketer of group travel. The company continually sought to expand its operations, including offering the first-ever American charter tour to the Far East in 1967 and Around the World by Private Luxury Jet in 1977. At the same time, INTRAV pioneered many of the European waterways routes that are still in use today. INTRAV also gained worldwide acclaim for offering the first-ever Around the World by Private Concorde journey in 1987, which remained a hugely popular trip until the Concorde's retirement some 15 years later. In 1982, Ebsworth - continuing to seek unfilled niches in the travel market - launched Clipper Cruise Line. The initial strategy for Clipper was to offer domestic cruises with an educational bent aboard yachtlike U.S.-flag ships as an alternative to the big-cruise-ship experience. That was very successfully accomplished with, first, the Newport Clipper, and, after its sale, the Nantucket Clipper and Yorktown Clipper - both of which sailed the coasts and interior waterways of the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico as part of the Clipper fleet until early 2006. When Ebsworth decided to take the company public in 1995, INTRAV acquired Clipper as a subsidiary, and the two officially became Intrav, Inc., with longtime Clipper president Paul Duynhouwer assuming the role of CEO and president. Clipper's reach was soon extended with the acquisition of our international ships, the Clipper Adventurer and Clipper Odyssey. Today, Intrav, Inc., is owned by First Choice Holidays PLC, a highly respected UK-based travel company that operates from 17 countries around the globe, and is part of the US group known as First Choice Expeditions.
