Al-Arqam Islamic School
University
Info
Al-Arqam Islamic School was founded in September, 1998 by 7 board members, volunteers from 7 Islamic centers in the surrounding area--each serving a different ethnic population (in an effort to represent the entire Muslim community). School is located in a predominately lower-income, urban area. It is surrounded by apartment complexes and retail businesses. Directly next door to the school is a newly-established Sheriff's Department headquarters and Voter Registration office. The School is within one mile of the interstate (CA Highway 99). The socio-economic make-up of the parent population is predominately middle class. The School's mission is to have an educational institution that teaches and nurtures the "whole" child and to instill in each student the principles of submission to the Will of God as an essential element in achieving excellence academically and personally. The prime objective of the institution is to meet the educational needs of the Muslim children living within the greater Sacramento area. The school's academic program offers all core subjects (Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies), also Arabic as a 2nd Language. We emphasize the use of the Arabic language, spoken and written, in order to increase the awareness of the Qur'an and its meaning. Our religious program propagates the daily practice of Islam as a comprehensive way of life, following the example of the Prophet Muhamad (peace be upon him). A prime school objective is to develop in each student a strong moral character, and build on their individual self worth, discipline, independence, ethical standards, love of learning, sense of personal efficacy and responsibility as a citizen of the religious, local, national and global communities. To this end, a new pursuit for our school, is to achieve International Baccalaureate authorization for the Middle Years Program (Grades 6-10). Al-Arqam School is now an IB Candidate School.
