Our eye, dental, and general medicine departments are superb, and we offer specialized services to populations normally underserved by the medical community. Visit any of our primary care or social services programs and you see the positive impact and quality of our services. Whittier Street Health Center was established in 1932 as a well baby clinic. Over the past 75 years, WSHC has expanded the scope of its services and the population it serves. Whittier is a federally funded (Section 330) and Joint Commission accredited non-profit, urban community health center serving more than 12,000 individuals with a diverse team of 130 medical, social services, administrative professionals and paraprofessionals, whose commitment to serving the community is unsurpassed. Our comprehensive health and social services are offered in 17 languages to patients representing more than 20 different countries. Whittier Street Health Center is truly representative of the changing faces of Boston. Whittier is part of the Boston Empowerment Zone, an area distinguished by its higher degree of poverty and urban blight, and whose residents are subject to considerable negative socio-economic and environmental risks to their overall health, wellbeing and longevity. Whittier's patients face a disproportionate risk of major diseases and health threats including diabetes, cancer, asthma, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, HIV/Aids, substance abuse and violence. The Center serves the homeless, elderly, disabled, and chronically ill populations of Boston. Whittier's patients are predominantly low-income, uninsured, and underinsured. Whittier is committed to providing care to every person who walks through our doors, regardless of ability to pay.
