Nueces Electric Cooperative, Inc. (NEC) was chartered in December of 1938 amidst the flurry of rural electrification growth throughout the country. Today, NEC (a nonprofit, customer-owned corporation) proudly serves 9,093 members with 12,555 electric meters in eight(8) South Texas counties including: Nueces, Kleberg, Kenedy, Live Oak, Jim Wells, McMullen, Brooks, and Duval counties. Nueces Electric Cooperative has 3,081miles of overhead electricity distribution line and 103 miles of underground distribution line. NEC's Annual Membership Meeting (held in October) is an opportunity for member-consumers to elect their board of directors, and express their thoughts about the co-op. In addition to high-quality electric service for "at cost" rates, NEC's member benefits include security lighting, a scholarship program, the Youth Tour program, free energy audits, convenient billing programs, electric safety education programs, community and economic development programs, Operation Round-Up (members volunteer to round-up their bills with the proceeds given to HALO-Flight Air Ambulance Service), and many other "personal touch" services for NEC members, their businesses, and their communities.
