Visual Art Exchange provides unique and important exhibitions and programs for both the public and the art community. As the only organization dedicated to exhibiting the work of emerging, relocated and avocational artists in the Raleigh area, VAE offers opportunities to visual artists of all media and skill levels. Hundreds of artists have been able to exhibit in the gallery and traveling exhibits, attend skill-building workshops, and learn about the 'business' of being a successful artist. VAE has an extensive volunteer program. A broad section of the community benefits from VAE's exhibitions. VAE is uniquely dedicated to helping artists gain confidence and exposure through programming, networking, education programs, exhibitions, and sales opportunities. VAE has over 300 members in four categories: exhibiting artists, (78%), seniors (12%), students (6%) and supporters (4%). Membership is non-juried to include artists of all skill levels who wish to take an active role in the local arts community. 35% of VAE's current membership resides outside of Raleigh. The exhibitions in the gallery and off-site locations are of significant value to the community. VAE has seized a role to expose the entire community to the visual arts. Showcasing artwork in unexpected places provides a forum for people to experience creativity, expression, and artistic skill. VAE produces The Raleigh Street Painting Festival, an event which also brings visual art to an unexpected place. VAE is also committed to reaching the community through its outreach and education program. The cornerstone of this program is the annual student art exhibition at its City Market Gallery. During the 2006-2007 school year, VAE will launch the first year of a new education program aimed at at-risk youth in Wake County's Alternative High Schools. VAE's exhibitions are open five days a week and during monthly First Friday gallery walks. Its off campus exhibit locations offer even more art exposure to the community. Most of VAE exhibitions and programs are open to non-members and members alike.
