Description of JJ Latin Dancers' Studio

JJ Latin Dancers was originally founded in July of 2000 and the name has stood strong ever since, although surviving more in spirit than in actuality at times. Julian Hidalgo started the dance group with a group of friends shortly after he finished high school, with the purpose of bringing the NY Style Salsa a.k.a. "Mambo" scene to Rhode Island. After performing for about a year and a half at local venues, such as the Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Bolivian Festivals, as well as other multi-cultural events at the University of Rhode Island, Johnson & Wales University, Providence College and Water Fire, the group disintegrated due to an unfortunate accident where Julian lost his mother and suffered some near debilitating injuries. At the time the idea of the group performing again seemed far from being possible. It wasn't until three and a half years later, after going to the Water Fire 2005, a local event in the city of Providence, where he saw Hacha y Machete and Salsa y Control perform, that the very idea of reforming the dance group even became plausible. The drive being that it was on that night when one of his students, Carlos Gonzalez, said to him "Yo, I want to do that too." The thought hit like a brick: "why not?" And from that day on the group was reformed, and made their choreography debut "JJ Colada" on November 20th, 2005 at a local night club called Platforms during the "Strictly Salsa" dance social.
