The Company was established in Houlton, Maine in 1897 in response to the needs of a group of local farmers. The members of the group paid a small fee at the beginning of the policy term and each member was assessed periodically as fires occurred. In 1906, the Company was relocated to Presque Isle, Maine and shared offices with other local insurance companies which, together, became known as Maine Mutual Group. Throughout the years, several of these small mutual companies pooled their resources and have grown into what is today known as MMG Insurance Company. In 1988, Maine Mutual Fire Insurance Company moved its headquarters from Main Street to a modern, 27,000 square foot facility on Maysville Street in Presque Isle. The facility was designed not only to meet the Company's current needs, but to offer opportunities as MMG expands into the future. In March 2002, the Company completed the transformation to a mutual holding company, resurrecting the Maine Mutual Group name. We strongly believe the mutual holding company structure will be beneficial to policyholders and the Company. This structure allows for the continuation of mutuality, while providing the Company with enhanced responsiveness in a changing marketplace and the stability of decision making with a long-term view. It will also provide greater financial flexibility, allowing the Company to compete on a more level playing field with its stockheld competitors. Finally, this structure will allow Maine Mutual Group to remain the company it is today with the ability to take its successful business model into the future.
