Kirby's Flowers has been bringing a "Personal Touch" to Portsmouth for 80 years with floral arrangements for all occasions. The present owners' grandfather William Kirby began the business in 1924 in his own backyard. He grew garden flowers and sold them right on the curb of Robinson Avenue. Kirby's business boomed so much, William rented a store on Gallia Street and started selling fresh cut flowers and plants. Kirby's seven children were involved in the business and expanded by purchasing their current location, 923 Gallia Street in the 1930's. Kirby's second generation to run the business was William's children, Richard, John Sr., Gert and Grace Kirby. Third generation cousins, John Kirby Jr., took over in 1986 and Elisa Kirby in 1995. They were born and raised in the family business and have worked at the store practically their whole lives. Now, Kirby's is a florist as well as a gift shop. The secret to the store's success is excellent service and the personal touch the customer receives.
