The Diestel family has a long history with turkey ranching. Early members of the Diestel family immigrated to California from Germany and Italy over 100 years ago to begin ranching turkeys. In the 1920s, the family started raising turkeys on a 400-acre ranch in the Sierra Foothills near Sonora and quickly began building successful partnerships with many of the most famous San Francisco restaurants. Jack Diestel, at that time a young member of the family, watched the older men in his family to learn the secrets behind growing high-quality range turkeys. In 1949, Jack started his own ranch just a few miles down the road. The Diestel family has been ranching that land ever since, now under the leadership of Tim Diestel, Jack's son. In the beginning, the Diestel ranch sold turkeys just to local markets at certain times of year, but now Tim and Joan Diestel and their children sell all-natural turkeys and turkey products up and down the West Coast and to a variety of other places around the country. Diestel turkeys have the freedom to roam the Sierra Foothills and are fed a low fat vegetarian diet of corn and soybeans milled right at the ranch. This means no animal byproducts, growth stimulants, or hormones are fed to their turkeys. Turkeys are also given a longer than average time to develop, making sure they develop flavor naturally. Leaving nothing up to chance and avoiding expensive and energy-intensive transportation to the processor, the ranch processes and distributes the turkey themselves, making them one of the last small, family owned ranches to do so. This means a wider variety of turkey products produced right at the ranch, with every step of the way fully monitored and controlled for quality and safety by the Diestel family. Products are then brought directly to New Seasons Market, making it a very short line from the producer to your table.
