In 1992, HFD funded and conducted the first ever comprehensive study of Spa-Goers entitled, the HFD Spa-Goer Market Study. Almost 2,000 Spa-Goers from 27 spas in North America were surveyed in an effort to understand their profile, attitudes and behavior. Since that original, landmark study, HFD also examined, in the 1994 HFD Non Spa-Goer Market Study why some guests at a resort did not use the spa during their visit. HFD's operations-based surveys have included the 1994 HFD Spa Economics Study --an analysis of the financial potential, costs and realities of marketing and operating both destination and amenity spas and the 1995 HFD Spa Operations Survey --a detailed examination of operational revenues and expenses of 38 American spas. In the Summer of 1997, HFD conducted the follow-up to their landmark 1992 study of the Spa-Goer. The 1997 HFD Spa-Goer Market Study surveyed almost 3,000 guests at 36 amenity and destination spas. In 1999, HFD conducted the 1999 HFD Resort-based Spa Economic Study which examined the economics of 30 spas within resorts. HFD founded and chaired the annual Spa Show for spa owners and operators as part of the Club Industry Trade Show from 1993-1995. In 1994, HFD was chosen by CESTUR, the educational division of the Mexican Ministry of Tourism, to help develop the spa industry in Mexico via seminars involving all aspects of planning, marketing and operating health spas.
