Dunn's Sporting Goods was founded in Salem, MO in 1958 by George and Mary Dunn. They ran the business for 3 years in Salem, then moved to Pevely, MO in 1961. While the store sold retail, there were five traveling salemen that covered five states selling wholesale. In 1978, George and Mary opened another retail location in Florrisant, MO, with Dean Dunn as the manager. In 1980, a retail store in Marion, IL. was opened, with Dennis Dunn as the store manager. The family business was changing from mainly being a wholesale business to retail. The Florrisant store was closed in 1986 due to a rise in rent and an istance of armed robbery. In 1987, the Pevely store burned down and George Dunn was severely burned, but survived and still goes to work daily. The store was rebuilt and opened in 1988. In 1990 a store in Paducah, KY was opened with Dale Dunn as the store manager. George and Mary moved to Paducah to help open and run the store. Five years later, George and Mary moved back to Pevely. In 1997 Dunn's opened its 4th, and largest store in St. Charles, MO with 38,000 sq. ft. Dunn's has always been a family owned and operated business with most of the family at one time or another working at the stores. There are nine kids in the family, six boys and three girls that have all worked at Dunn's Sporting Goods at one time or another. Out of the nine, three boys, Dennis, Dean and Steve remain working at the family business.
