PAWTUCKET -- It's only fitting that Morris Nathanson was chosen to create the 2007 Pawtucket Arts Festival Poster says Herb Weiss, Pawtucket's economic and cultural director and chairman of the Pawtucket Arts Festival Committee. The symbol of the ninth annual extravaganza was made by way of a special process which combines the artistic talent of internationally renowned artist and businessman Morris Nathanson, with the digital technique of another Pawtucket artisan, Ted Peffer, owner of Iolabs at 538 Mineral Spring Ave. The latter company, says Weiss, has developed and reproduced 100 copies of the poster, which can't be copied again. Meanwhile, Morris will sign each. The final product will be sold for $50 each and the profit will roll over into next year's festival, he says. As for Nathanson, owner of Morris Nathanson, Inc., at 163 Exchange St., his life's path has taken him to Pawtucket twice. First when he was born at the corner of Japonica and Fountain streets and a second time when Pawtucket suddenly represented the ideal alternative to New York. When the thought struck Nathanson that a mill building with a consortium of artists would be the perfect atmosphere for sharing, brainstorming, it turned out that Pawtucket was just beginning to look for tenants to inhabit its renovated Mill District. Besides, he says, he enjoys the view as his office overlooks Tolman High School, where he received a diploma. After attending four schools of higher education, Nathanson went to New York, the logical step for a young man who intended spend a career creating murals for large public and private restaurants, hospitality centers and outdoor parks. In fact, he regularly visits EuroDisney in France, a cruise ship line, hotels and public and private locations in England, the Netherlands, Aruba, Thailand, Athens, Saudi Arabia, and wherever his upscale clients invite him and his staff of 18 to work. "The unusual thing about artists in the city is that they're hidden. Unlike retail people, you don't see them lined up on the streets," he says. "Meanwhile, downtown is a lot like a beehive. Over 500 artists work here, a trend I was happy to help begin at 163 Exchange Street, across the street from my former high school." The location of this consortium offers the opportunity to brainstorm which is exactly how the idea to create 100 posters arose, after a long conversation with Herb Weiss, Economic and Cultural Director of the city. Weiss introduced Nathanson to Ted Peffer, owner of Iolabs, where the two joined forces to produce an artwork which can only be created by the two such entities. "We could if a customer wished, make close to exact copies of anything they bring in. On the other hand, we can produce a proof of an image that is meant to be changed. That's what we've done with Nathanson's 21" x 26" poster. "This poster is being constructed out of archival Bradford rag and pigmented inks and that means they'll stand up for 100 years," he says. In the meantime, as an enticement, 250 smaller posters will be displayed throughout the city.
