113 Browne St, 13820 OneontaCustom Electronics, Inc. was founded in 1963 and incorporated in 1964. Our first product was a reconstituted mica-paper capacitor. Our inaugural market thrust was the military. Our first client was General Electric, for whom we produced capacitors for the F-111 aircraft's ground-surveillance radar system. Our first production order was for Raytheon, a world-renowned high-tech company that to this day remains one of our key customers. In our early days, Custom manufactured capacitors and developed prototypes that were accepted and approved by major companies such as General Electric, Raytheon, and Texas Instruments. Peter Dokuchitz, Custom's founder and president, explained his entrepreneurial marketing strategy: "The fundamental challenge was to pick that particular niche in the overall capacitor market where we knew our parts would be applicable. This niche had to be characterized by minimal competition. In other words, we had to be free to dominate a relatively 'competition free' area of the market so that we would have the best shot at becoming the finest capacitor producer." As high-tech industries developed at full speed in the U.S. during the '70s and '80s, so did Custom. We met the demand for capacitors in highly sophisticated oil-and-gas exploration tools, military equipment, and government space satellites. More recently, capacitors that started out for use in military applications began to find a place in commercial applications. Looking back at Custom's initial marketing strategy, Dokuchitz notes that, "It is important to add that the element of timing really helped us. They say you make your own luck and Custom was in the right place when the high-tech revolution began in the United States. Our company has continued to grow because we have positioned ourselves to be the leading manufacturer of reconstituted mica-paper capacitors, to be at the cutting edge of an unfolding high-tech era."
