The Steel Structures Technology Center focuses on technical education related to the design, fabrication, erection and inspection of steel-framed structures. The firm's practice includes consulting services in steel construction practices and quality. Founded in 1990, SSTC has provided training to thousands of engineers, fabricators, erectors, inspectors, building officials and others involved in steel buildings, steel bridges and steel construction. SSTC seminars are conducted in cooperation with the International Code Council, and all SSTC seminars are approved for ICC certification renewals. Each one-day Inspection seminar provides 7.0 continuing education hours (0.7 CEUs, 7.0 PDHs), and the Plan Reading seminar provides 2.0 continuing education hours (0.2 CEUs, 2.0 PDHs). For AWS Certified Welding Inspectors, SSTC seminars count toward AWS CWI renewal under AWS QC1:2006. For professional engineers and structural engineers, SSTC seminars also count toward continuing education / professional development requirements. To improve efficiency and quality in the steel construction industry, SSTC publishes the Structural Bolting Handbook, the Structural Welding Quality Handbook, and the Shop Inspection Handbook for Steel Buildings. SSTC frequently provides consulting services to owners, engineers, fabricators, erectors and testing agencies to assist in the understanding and/or resolution of steel construction issues. Examples of recent work includes implementation of the new AISC and AWS requirements for seismic construction, bolting installation and quality issues, welding design and quality issues, and the development and review of welding procedure specifications. Robert E. Shaw, Jr., PE, provides these consulting services through the SSTC. Mr Shaw, with 33 years experience in the steel construction industry, is active in standards development, serving on AISC, AWS, RCSC and ASTM standards-writing committees.
