Merritt Hospitality, now the tenth largest hotel management company in the United States, was founded in 2001. As a wholly owned subsidiary of HEI Hospitality, Merritt is an independent hotel management company currently operating 28 hotels in 11 states under well-known brand names such as Westin, Marriott, Sheraton and Hilton. The company quickly became the fastest growing hotel management company in the industry. In 2002 Merritt operated 2 hotels. During 2003 an additional 11 hotels were added to the portfolio. In 2004, between a combination of new partners and with the launch of HEI Hospitality's private equity fund, 11 more hotels were added to the management portfolio. In 2005 the rapid growth continued exclusively through HEI Fund I, bringing on an additional 6 hotels.
