Info

On October 2, 2008 the Intrepid is scheduled to return home to a state-of-the-art public pier. A park-like setting on Pier 86 will allow visitors to enjoy spectacular views along the Hudson River. Our brand new pier will feature a new glass elevator tower with direct access to both the Hangar and Flight Decks and will afford the museum endless event possibilities in this newly improved outdoor space. While construction of Pier 86 continues, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, now berthed at Staten Island's Homeport Pier, is fully immersed in her refurbishment, interior renovation and new exhibit installation. With this exciting re-design of the former aircraft carrier tuned floating museum, the exterior and much of interior architecture of the ship is restored to its original state. Upon the Museum's re-opening in November 2008, for the first time, visitors will have access to newly restored and never-before-seen spaces where the crew lived and worked while the Intrepid was in service. These spaces include the fo'c'sle (commonly known as the anchor chain room), general berthing quarters, and mess quarters. The Intrepid Museum is dedicated to the exhibition and interpretation of history, science and service as related to its home aboard the national historic landmark, the U.S.S. Intrepid. At the heart of our mission is exemplary educational programs, providing opportunities for learning enjoyment, and constantly expanding and improving our collection of exhibits and artifacts. From the ship itself as a unique and historic artifact to our extensive aircraft collection to those newly restored spaces in the ship, our goal for these new exhibits and experiences is to present both a lens for visitors to see what life was like for crewmembers onboard this city at sea as well as connect Intrepid history with key 20th century global events and scientific and technological innovations. Our hangar deck will feature a new layout and design including additional content and new interactive exhibits. The Museum's new main exhibition space on the hangar deck will help to organize our visitors' experiences. A key design innovation centers around an architectural case that creates an organizing spine that runs along the length of the main exhibition floor from bow to stern on the hangar deck. For each era in Intrepid's history, two stories are told - the technological story and the human story as connected with Intrepid's journeys. This design bridges the history of technological innovation with the humanity behind the hardware and is both presented through artifact displays and multi-media presentations.
