Castle Harlan was founded in 1987, but its roots reach back to the start of the institutionalized private equity market in the 1960s and the pioneering use of private equity limited partnerships as investment vehicles. Our investment funds are limited partnerships that include public and corporate pension funds, endowments and other institutional investors, and affluent individuals as participants. Since our inception, Castle Harlan has participated in seven private equity funds, four domestically and three in Australia. Those funds totaled more than $3.2 billion in capital commitments and have realized rates of return of approximately 30 percent compounded. We have also joined forces with one of Australia's leading private investment firms to create CHAMP - Castle Harlan Australian Mezzanine Partners. Together Castle Harlan and CHAMP employ more than 35 investment professionals. The Castle Harlan team of 10 managing directors is notable for its stability, as well as for broad experience, creativity and integrity. The firm's principals average tenure with the firm is in excess of ten years. We make our investment decisions on a consensus basis, with all of the firm's professionals participating. Integrity and personal trust are fundamental to everything we do. We also are supported by an effective network of affiliates - present and former executives of portfolio companies, side-by-side investors in our funds, and friends of the firm - who help us maintain a strong operating focus by finding or analyzing potential acquisitions, serving on boards and management teams, and contributing industry expertise.
