AusAm is developing a new class of anti-viral compounds known as attachment inhibitors. Our attachment inhibitors are polysaccharide-based compounds that prevent a virus from attaching to and infecting its target cell. AusAm's lead anti-viral compound, DES6, has shown the ability to inhibit the infection of white blood cells by HIV and other viruses. We are working in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health to explore potential uses of our attachment inhibitors as both treatments for HIV-infected individuals and as preventatives for the sexual transmission of HIV and herpes.
