As one of only 39 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and the only one in New Jersey, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) is dedicated to improving the prevention, detection, treatment, and care of patients with cancer, through the transformation of laboratory discoveries into clinical practice. To gain a "comprehensive" designation, the highest ranking given by the NCI, a center must meet specific criteria in cancer care, research, prevention and education. As a Center of Excellence of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey , Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, CINJ is committed to learning more about cancer and making its discoveries available to the public to aid in disease prevention. CINJ offers its patients access to the latest cancer research studies and experimental therapies. The leadership of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey is comprised of a team of distinguished researchers and physicians who are internationally recognized in their field. Basic scientists, clinical researchers, and scientists who study cancer prevention and control within the general population meet regularly to exchange information and ensure that laboratory discoveries are refined and applied to clinical care as quickly as possible, that clinical observations reach laboratory researchers on a continuing basis, and that prevention strategies are interwoven in to all research programs. The caring environment that has been CINJ's hallmark from the beginning is evident throughout its facility. A special effort has been made to configure the patient care setting to create the feel of a much smaller institution - from the intimate clinic waiting rooms to the comfortable Resource and Learning Center, where patients and their families can review reliable, relevant and current information about all aspects of cancer. Through its community-based partnerships, CINJ is working to reduce the cancer mortality rate in New Jersey's underserved populations. This is being accomplished by increasing public awareness about the importance of early detection and screening, and improving the knowledge base on ways to prevent cancer. CINJ is committed to treating each and every patient with the utmost compassion and providing treatment options that are as unique as the patients themselves.
