Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop
Info
The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop is the longest standing Community Theatre Group in the area. Founded in 1950, the Workshop is a private, not-for-profit organization devoted to providing and promoting quality theatre in our area. Since its inception, the Workshop has provided anyone interested in the theatre -- from the behind-the-scenes to center stage -- a niche in which to hone their craft, and also provided countless audiences with hundreds of memorable performances. Highlights of the past fifty plus years have included Blithe Spirit, The Sunshine Boys, Pajama Game, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Deathtrap, Steel Magnolias, The Owl & The Pussycat, Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music, The Miracle Worker, A Streetcar Named Desire, Nunsense, Equus and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, to name just a few. Many of our productions and individual performances have earned not only critical acclaim, but also awards from the Theatre Association of New York State (TANYS). In 1998, the Workshop purchased the Rivoli Theatre in South Fallsburg. A 1923 Art Deco Theatre, the Rivoli has seen Vaudeville come and go, and given generations of movie-goers many happy hours. Our ambitious dream to restore the theatre is well underway. The theatre was recently granted Landmark status in the National Registry of Historic Places. Our Nartoff-Wells Auditorium seats 475 and is fully heated and air-conditioned. Much work is being done inside and out to bring the Rivoli back to its original splendor. In addition to the performances of our own productions, we have hosted outside performances as well as concerts and some children's theatre. For the first two summers, after the purchase of the theatre, we continued to show movies, but have discontinued that practice. We do plan an ocassional film festival so that we can make use of our beautiful antique projectors -- the oldest, continually run arc light projectors in the Country! Of course, we are always in need of additional funding to help us fulfill the many dreams we have yet to realize, including a permanent sound and lighting system, replacing the original stage curtain, restoring the Art Deco auditorium's ceiling and walls, and many other projects! A current fund-raiser is our "Seat of Our Pants Campaign" -- in which we are "selling seats" -- actually, a brass name plate to be affixed to the backs of the 475 seats in our theatre. Seats can be labeled with an individual's name, a couples' name, a family name -- or for a loved one who's memory you would like to honor. Seats are $150 each and you can even specify the location of the seats you'd like to purchase -- we'll do the best to match or come closest to your choice, depending upon availability. Of course, contributions in any amount are always gladly received and your tax-deductible check can be made out to Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop (SCDW) and mailed to PO Box 353, Monticello, NY 12701.
