Castings have round edges with radiuses which reduces stress points. This is more beneficial than fabrications. For fabrications it is difficult to add a radius but in a casting minimum radiuses are part of the design. Radius corners are a benefit because stresses look to concentrate at points like an inside corner. Forgings pound the metal in one plane and not in the other. Therefore the properties determined by the grain structure are better in one direction than another. A casting has uniform equal properties in all plans Forging typically requires longer runs to be economical. Forging dies are extremely expensive when compared to casting patterns. If you use a good foundry you will get good castings. We follow strict ASTM (American Society for testing and Materials) and Military specifications to see that the castings meet your expectations. These may include dimensional requirements, chemical requirements, physical requirements, heat treatment requirements, visual inspections, magnetic particle inspections, three levels of radiographic inspection and destructive testing.
