8036 US Highway 70, 38133 MemphisIn 1931, GreenScape was started as a landscape maintenance firm in Fort Smith, Arkansas . Over the next few years the organization grew but World War II interrupted the business operations. However, after the war and the founder being stationed at Navy Millington, GreenScape resumed business in Memphis with a three-acre nursery on Summer Avenue. By concentrating on custom landscape planting and maintenance, GreenScape developed a loyal clientele that kept returning for individualized, high quality landscape services. GreenScape expanded to include a ten-acre nursery at Ellendale, Tennessee , then in 1952 a 60-acre nursery for growing, then unavailable, specimen trees and shrubs at Arlington, Tennessee. Realizing the need to blend the skill of the professional designer with the skill of the horticultural craftsman to produce a better product, GreenScape added landscape architecture to the services provided by the firm in 1956. In 1969 complete landscape irrigation services, the first in the Mid-South region was introduced. Recognizing the need to maintain these more sophisticated landscapes, particularly with of the advent of pest controlling but potentially deadly chemicals, landscape management was added in the 70s. Later, we were the first to introduce Seasonal Color to Memphis. In the 80s, to fill a need for coordination of all the exterior site development, particularly of large-scale, high-end residential work, Hardscape was created. Thus, all elements of landscaping were in place. To insure diversity of exposure to ever-changing landscape trends and knowledge, GreenScape chose to be a design/build and a competitive bid for the work of all outstanding landscape architects firm. In early 1990, the operations of GreenScape were divided between the principals, resulting in Frank Colvett becoming the sole owner. All services of GreenScape were retained and/or expanded. The principle office and growing nursery was moved to 7902 Summer Avenue in Ellendale. Subsequently, Shirley Pitts and Frank Colvett, Jr. became owners. The company started in 1931 is today a full-service landscape design/contracting/ management firm for soft and hardscape that employs over 100 associates. The Chairman of the Board is Frank Colvett who grew up in the family business, worked in all phases of the operation and concentrated his college career on ornamental horticulture and business management. President and CEO is Shirley Pitts who began as a bookkeeper over twenty years ago and was instrumental in growing the company. Continuing the family business as the fourth generation, Frank Colvett, Jr. is Vice President of Marketing. Keeping the traditions established over seventy years ago, GreenScape has grown and expanded while maintaining the reputation of being one of the most qualities oriented and service conscious organizations in the country. It has been recognized with numerous national and regional awards.
