As previously announced, the malpractice insurance company, PHICO, which has provided malpractice insurance since 1998 for hospitals owned by UHS was placed in rehabilitation by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in August. If PHICO is liquidated, it may not be able to pay all of the remaining unpaid malpractice claims which may be presented to UHS hospitals. These claims may then have to be paid directly by the hospitals.
