UP-EMS was established in 1976 and was staffed and operational in 1981. UP-EMS coordinates a comprehensive network of the region's EMS providers, including ambulance services, medical first responder organizations, rescue teams, EMS personnel, medical control authorities, and other related individuals and groups. UP-EMS provides various services including training and education, technical assistance, information and publications, instructional resources and other activities that support rural emergency medical services. Additional contracted responsibilities include administering the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician examinations for Michigan EMS licensure, EMS vehicle and operation inspections, and educational program review/approval for the Michigan Department of Community Health. UP-EMS receives funding from the Michigan Department of Community Health, various local United Way agencies, and occasionally receives grants and donations.
