The Brush Art Gallery is a non-profit organization. It was founded in 1982 by the Lowell Historic Preservation Commission, U.S. Department of the Interior. Modeled after the Torpedo factory art complex in Alexandria, Virginia, the Brush is a dynamic and inviting place. Going into our twenty-sixth year, since being founded by the Lowell Historical Preservation Commission, U.S. Department of the Interior, in 1982, our mission has remained the same: to nurture the working artist; to keep the visual arts alive and healthy in the heart of Lowell's historic district; to demonstrate through exhibitions and cultural programming the diverse and rich heritage that exists in Lowell; and to make Lowell a destination for viewing some of the finest art being produced in New England and beyond. Come and discover our unique gallery and artists studios, located in a restored mill in Lowell. Enjoy our outstanding, museum quality, exhibitions and educational programs that focus on regional, national, and, international artists. Designed to be educational, exhibitions at the Brush provide an opportunity to see art as humanity's universal language. With more than fifty different ethnic groups making their home in Lowell, we have developed a series of Building Community Through Culture exhibitions and programs which focus on the various groups. Additionally, some of the finest artists from the New England area, and beyond, are featured in thematic group and one-person exhibitions. Take time to visit our studios, which provide affordable and accessible space for area artists who work in a variety of media. Since the studios are open to the public on a daily basis, there is always an opportunity to talk to and observe the artists at work, as well as purchase artwork from their studios and gift shop.
