Museum for African Art
Museum
Info
The Museum for African Art is the center for discovering the arts of Africa, from classic to contemporary. We collect, preserve and exhibit art that is as dynamic and diverse as the continent of Africa. We cultivate an appreciation for Africa's historical and current impact on world culture. We inspire respect for Africa and its people by building awareness and understanding of the arts, history, and heritage of Africa. We bring diverse communities together and create opportunities for dialogue and experiential and interactive learning. The Museum for African Art is the only independent institution devoted exclusively to fostering the understanding and appreciation of African art and culture and to highlighting Africa's significant contributions to American and world culture. The New York Times wrote in 2003, "Since its founding nearly twenty years ago, the museum has consistently shed new light on the incalculably rich and varied terrain that is African art". It is at this point, that the Museum is launching a capital campaign to construct its permanent home on Fifth Avenue and 110th Street - where Museum Mile meets Harlem. The new Museum will become an essential destination for New Yorkers and visitors alike -- an exciting gathering place on Museum Mile. Visitors will be able to view wide ranging exhibitions, watch a film, attend a dance or musical performance, accompany their children to a workshop, meet friends for lunch or shop for gifts. The Museum for African Art will offer visitors a chance to explore and understand rich and varied African cultures, bringing together diverse audiences to honor the accomplishments and the hopes and dreams that continue to inspire this vast continent and the world.
