BayShore School
University
Info
BayShore School is a private school, independent study program. This means that children are educated in their homes and the community-at-large, as opposed to spending six (or more) hours a day being instructed within a traditional classroom setting. Like most private schools, students apply to the program and once accepted, pay an annual tuition fee. BayShore School is not a public charter school. Nor do we provide a prepackaged curriculum or credentialed teachers to oversee your children's academic work. One of the flexibilities of private schools in California is that teachers need to be qualified, which does not necessarily mean credentialed. My child is in high school and did not pass the exit exam - can he/she enroll in BayShore School and receive a high school diploma? Public school students are welcome to apply to BayShore School. However, enrollment in the 12th grade does not automatically ensure a high school diploma. High school students enrolled in BayShore must first be accepted, apply for graduation, and complete all required coursework in order to be granted a diploma. Does BayShore School require that students take and pass the Exit Exam before they can graduate? No, the Exit Exam is not a requirement (another one of those flexibilities afforded private schools), nor does BayShore require any standardized test. In fact, we are blatantly anti high stakes test advocates. If you don't require standardized testing and you don't require a specific curriculum, how do the students learn? It's quite simple - they learn in the real world! Students entering BayShore School from public education will have their transcripts evaluated to determine that certain requirements have been met (e.g. consumer math, language arts, sciences, social sciences, etc.). Students and their parents will receive a listing of what academics need to be completed in order for the student to graduate. A list of electives (based on the students' interests and future goals) will also be recommended. Most academics can be completed with books/materials from local libraries and bookstores. What if my high school student passed all of his/her classes and is not permitted to graduate because of the exit exam, can't BayShore School just look over the student's transcript and issue a diploma? No, students who wish to receive a high school diploma from BayShore School must be enrolled during the semester in which the student plans to graduate, and must complete all BayShore requirements - no exceptions. Can my student enroll during a summer session to fulfill BayShore School's requirements and obtain a diploma? No, we do not offer a summer session for new students. The earliest a new student would be able to graduate from BayShore School would be at the end of the Fall 2006 semester. How do I enroll my student in BayShore School? Go to the BayShore School webpage where you can download the enrollment forms (in a pdf). Further information about BayShore is available there and also on the Frequently Asked Questions webpage.
