Majors is one of the oldest medical book distributors in this country. Incorporated by Dr. J. A. Majors in 1909, it has become the largest distributor of health science books in the United States, with warehouses and offices in four major cities. After working his way through medical school by selling books to doctors during summer vacations and in his spare time, Dr. Majors needed financing to begin his medical career. Upon graduation, what had started as a part-time job became a lifetime profession in the medical book business. He established his first headquarters in New Orleans, Louisiana, and let the major medical book publishers at that time know of his desire to warehouse their books and represent them in the South. A few years later, in 1914, he opened a second office and warehouse in Dallas, Texas (the corporate headquarters, which is now located in Dallas), and in 1948 established a third branch in Atlanta, Georgia. The Company continued to grow, and in 1956 a fourth office and warehouse was opened in Houston's famed Texas Medical Center. In 1964 the Houston Branch expanded into the sci-tech market, maintaining an inventory of books in business and management, geosciences, electronics, chemistry, physics and other highly specialized fields. In 1986 Majors acquired Medical & Technical Books in Los Angeles, California, giving the company a coast-to-coast distribution network. Majors founded a subscriptions division early in the company's history as a value-added service to the library customers. Over the years, Majors Scientific Subscriptions grew to be the largest vendor of medical subscriptions in the country. Early in 1993, that division was acquired by EBSCO Subscription Services, and a working relationship between EBSCO and Majors developed to foster a cooperative, customer-oriented partnership whereby each company helps to recommend the other's services to library clients. Our library customers also can take advantage of our Continuations Division's success. Organized in the early 1970s, Continuations provides standing order type services for irregularly published serials and monographs. The staff works out of the Dallas headquarters office to provide this service to libraries around the country. The Company's aim from the beginning has been to provide excellent SERVICE. With technology changing so rapidly, Majors continues to automate programs to accommodate the special needs of the customers they serve. Most important of all are the highly trained personnel dedicated to maintaining leadership in a highly competitive field. Today there is the same optimistic outlook for the future that Dr. Majors had in the very beginning, and the Company is looking forward to the years ahead. Dr. Majors passed away in 1963 at the age of 91. His two sons, J. A. Majors, Jr., and William H. Majors, are Chairmen of both J. A. Majors Company and Majors Scientific Books, Inc.
